Thread: What would you want to change to make windows 7 better in windows 8?

I am wondering what you think that they should change about windows 7 to make windows 8 so great?

I thought a small feature that could be added is a way to make your webcam the background on your computer.
Turn it into a mirror so to speak. I heard that you could do this running on a linux OS.

Also thought the start bar can use some re-configuration. What instead of the pop up square with the search on the bottom,
its a circle that has a some smaller icons that when you scroll over them they increase in size. Not saying that the windows 7 start bar isnt attractive but its the same for awhile now. How about some other shapes windows?

• Get rid of the registry & group policy
  • One of the many problems with the registry is the fact that it separates the settings from the software. In my experience quite often the software leaves behind "Junk" after you use there uninstaller. The user is blind to this because the program's directory has been removed giving the illusion of a clean removal. Mean while there registry gets cluttered with "Junk".
    
  • Group policy is hidden away. It lets the user customize the computer in great detail but is unaccessible by user written software barring any non Microsoft code.
    
• Full control over all settings
  • Any body with administrator privileges should be able to change any OS setting without jumping through hoops.
  • The security problems associated with doing this are reduced by running as a normal user and elevating your privileges when needed. (This is addressed somewhat in 7 & Vista).

I would change home networking so it works in Windows as well as it does in Linux and Mac software. I have and windows is my main OS a linux netbook and a mac. On both of those I can network easily with the windows machine. I can run Itunes and it will immediately find Itunes on the other 2 machines and network with them just fine. On the windows xp machine(old machine slow processor) networking is a bitch to figure out. I have never managed to get it to network properly with the windows 7 machine. It really should not be that hard.

No, this is not a reply asking for help. It is just a statement that setting up a home network between windows machines should work as well as it does between windows/mac/linux.

I would like to have a way to make Windows 8 appear in energy-efficient mode. Like some web sites are now, such as Adobe.com, where the background is dark (and still pretty) and the printing is white or light-gray. See Energy Saving Websites - Green Web Design Color Palettes. (Marketing will call it energy efficient Windows--will there be a tax credit?)

This would affect Windows Explorer and every other window, except the Command Prompt window.

People use Microsoft Office a lot. It would be nice to change that, except for printing and for print preview.

People use e-mail. I'd like to see Windows Live Mail (and Outlook) take a lead in this.

Microsoft spent a lot of time and effort to give us Aero. I'm sure they can figure out the energy-efficient desktop experience. Maybe it's just an additional Aero feature.

People surf a lot, so could it be a feature in IE9, where one could change a black on white (basically) web page to a white on black web page, as an option.

The price. The pre-releases sold for around $50. That should be the regular price. Or two computers allowed for each license.... Come on really, how much money does Bill Gates have to have ?? Isn't 50 billion dollars enough ??

If it were cheaper, I could put it on my other computer, but nooooooooo......

Most of the Logitech cams CAN do this if you install their software.

Want to make Win8 better than Win7?
Make the start menu better and easier to configure. I have been using Win7 as my default OS for 6 months but have now returned to WinXP because I just can't use Win7 's start menu with the same ease as the classic start menu. A CSM third party program was a help but it to ran into restricting the way it worked.' There a lot of great things in Win7 that I love but the start menu for me was a disaster.

Quite simply I want to have a start menu in which I can easily create new menu folders, to which I can drag and drop other programs into and have each and every folder in the start menu have expanding fly outs of the folders contents when you hover the mouse over it.

Lets hope Win8 developers read through the Win7 forum and take note of all those who just couldn't live with the Win7 start menu and do something about it.

The 50billion dollars Microsoft has, is not Bill Gates. That money belongs to the company and the share holders as Microsoft is a publically traded company. Like every for profit business they are out to make money. If they do not turn a profit then they will not stay in business then we would all be stuck using a Mac. Have you ever tried to do a large scale network using Mac's...

ehh... no thanks. I would rather pay for it.
