Re: Be Careful about updating drivers!

    Hi

My problem is that in this case it is broke, because the driver that Windows 8 installs doesn't support OpenGL which means I have to go to Windows 7 to run some of my 3D creation software.

This is only one of several programs affected, so for now I'll have to do this stuff in Windows 7.

Re: Be Careful about updating drivers!

I was just posting to Saltgrass, on another driver issue. These different drivers are a PITA. Seriously. More than half of the drivers that's installed on the Windows 8 CP partition on my MSI notebook are Microsoft "generic" drivers. Serious loss of many OEM functions, including my multi level power schemes, Intel Turbo Boost, webcam/video functions, & other functions. The OEM install has "hotkeys", accessible by pressing FN+F1 through F12.

More than likely, on that notebook, I'm reverting back to the default Windows 7 Pro x64 install. This is too much loss of function, as well as driver mismatches, that I'm having to deal with. On that notebook, Windows 7 is outshining Windows 8 CP. But, I'm stating this in a civil manner w/o the page after page of dogging the OS, as one member of this forum has. I will not do that, nor lower myself to looking silly. There is a proper way to make the exit & remain dignity.

However, on my HP desktop, Windows 8 CP is still shining. There is no loss of function, and there has been notable lesser CPU usage, which will in turn make the desktop last longer. If it's not screaming at 100% of everything, it will last longer. That is where I'll keep it. Plus, my driver problems have been resolved, I believe. On that PC, Windows 8 can probably carry it until the 128 bit CPU's emerge, which is what I really want anyway. It was my hope that it would be introduced with Windows 8 (as rumored), but it's not going to happen.

I'm still going to be checking these drivers out on this desktop. What I'm probably going to have to do is print the "Device Manager" list of Windows 7, so that I can make sure that the proper drivers are installed on Windows 8. However, most should be fine by this point.

    Hi

I just tried again to upgrade my ATI drivers, I found a Windows 8 beta driver on the ATI site but the installation failed, same as last time. It doesn't really say it failed unless you open the installation document that it prompts you to read.

    But the driver doesn't install.

Re: Be Careful about updating drivers!

Folks, I agree & did say when I doing new builds for customers & vid card updates show/are offered, I do not take them. I learned long ago not to cus the display would go awry & the drive have to be rolled back, away.

However, in this case I knew something was amiss when I had no Previewer for things like PPS files in Outlook & knew that it was there in Outlook on my Windows7. So, when 'kemical' brought this particular driver update to my attention, I was glad of it. An update for my video card, recently released & specific for Windows8 and the blur w/ it @ Nvidia's site indicating it would cure the Previewer issue. It has. It has screwed nothing & given me all the features & functionality my vid card should have but, in Windows8 did not have until this driver update.

Ergo, I'm quite ok w/ making this exception. This time it was needed & the right thing to do.

    Cheers,
    Drew
