    windows 8?

I read the windows timeline (and then re-read it, since it's very complicated). I counted up each of the products they have do mainstream releases of (each with a different name, desktop icons, and capabilities) and came up with Windows 10. I realise there's mysterious "build numbers" that show up on the safe mode screens and these don't seem to change very much for some reason. Why are they calling the current windows "7" if they have actually released more different versions than that? Was it just that they had such a bad run with Windows ME and Windows Vista that they want to ignore them?

This is another ongoing debate.. There are many different ways to look at this.. But ultimately it does come back to Windows 8.. I'm sure someone will jump in and elaborate on this more..

A recently departed Microsoft employee's blog has revealed a rough version of Microsoft's road map for key software, including Windows 8. According to the information, Microsoft aims for Windows 8 support to start on July 1, 2011. Support for Windows Server 2012 starts on July 2, 2012.

    NT Product Line

The following is the Windows NT product line:
    • Windows NT 3.1
    • Windows NT 3.5
    • Windows NT 4.0
    • Windows 2000 (Windows NT 5.0)
    • Windows XP (Windows NT 5.1/5.2) and Windows Server 2003 (Windows NT 5.2)
    • Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 (Windows NT 6.0)
    • Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 (Windows NT 6.1)
This would make the next version of Windows.... Windows 8.

They have ditched the original product line (non-NT), which was:
    • Windows 1.0
    • Windows 2.0
    • Windows 2.1x aka Windows/286 and Windows/386
    • Windows 3.0
    • Windows 3.1
    • Windows 3.11
    • Windows 95 (Windows 4.0)
    • Windows 98 (Windows 4.1)
    • Windows Millennium Edition (Windows 4.9)
These operating systems were not derivative of the Windows NT kernel and do not follow the build numbering schema of those products. Its interesting to point out that they do have a bit of fun with the build numbers (if that is possible), by augmenting them for the next release.

In the case of Windows 7, we know that Windows 7 is actually Windows 6.1. This was claimed to have been done for compatibility reasons. From a marketing perspective, this product is named "Windows 7".

Will we get a product called Windows 8 or something else? This remains to be seen. Microsoft may opt to go with a fancy name, ala, XP, Vista, or some other word that they may find to be attractive. However, given the success of Windows 7, it would not be surprising to see them call it Windows 8.

    Hi,
Windows 8 I have heard it will be out around late 2011 Beta not Official release well not that i know of. I dunno do you think they would do a discount or free upgrade as i brought Windows 7 Ultimate last week and I am not going to be happy if there is not a discount or free upgrade. What do you think free, discount or pay full price?

    Hi,
I am wanting to test the latest Windows. I have changed Windows 7 to look like the Windows 8 but I want to actually have the programs working properly... I don't want the FBI or the cops busting down the door and taking me away though. So, that is why I am asking this question.

There is no Windows 8 yet - no leaked copy - nothing. Any rumor of a leaked copy is a verifiable myth or a copy of Windows 7 that was modified and infected with malware. Even if you had some way to gain a copy of an unreleased, early build that was leaked, it would very likely look similar to Windows 7 with build numbers changed. There is no way to acquire even a leaked build at this time.
