    I got banned!!!

    Hi

Today for the first time in many months I logged into Windows 7.

Apparently when I originally registered my Windows 8 forum account in Windows 7 I used my other AKA MikeMoss.
I seem to remember I had problems getting it to except MikeHawthorne so I use the other one.

I then re-registered when I got into Windows 8, using the same ID I do in the Windows 7 forum.

When I logged back into Windows 8 today, I got a message saying that I was banned.
At first I was confused, What had I done?, then I saw that it was the wrong account name.

My MikeHawthorne account still works, so there's no problem.

    Here's what's weird.

Why, when I logged back into Windows 8, which has always logged me in as MikeHawthorne, did it try to log me in as MikeMoss?

I don't see how being logged into Windows 7 could have changed this.

    Mike

    You were not banned.
    Your second account was.
    Both forums have this
Multiple Accounts: The creation of multiple accounts by the same person is not permitted.
    In our Terms of Service.
Regarding why you are having some kind of local issue with your browser I would first suspect cookies as I believe that is what maintains the remember me function on both sites.
Yesterday was, Today is, but ahh Tomorrow...mystery, suspense and a promise of hope.

    Re: I got banned!!!

    Hi

After posting this I finally remembered how this came about.

When the Windows 8 forum was first started I came here to set up an account, but it kept rejecting my login which was the same as the Windows 7 forum.

Finally after a several attempts I created an account with the login I use on game and some graphic arts forums.

A few days later after posting on the Windows 7 forum, that I couldn't create and account with my preferred user name, I got a message, I think from Mike that said it was fixed.

At that time I created a new account with my present ID.

When I logged into Windows 7 today, and started going through my e-mail I clicked on a link that should have taken me here.
it must have tried to log me in to my old account so when I got back here in Windows 8 it gave me the you've been banned message.
I think I got one way back when I first started using Windows 8 but I had forgotten all about it.

Anyway the mystery is solved, I guess.
I'm still a little confused about why it tried to log me into the old account here.
Seems like the Windows 8 cookies should control that.

I have no knowledge of how it works on Mike's sites, but, on some, the IP address is hooked onto the username, to prevent malpractice.

If this were the case, you would only be able to log onto one forum in the world. We do not track registrations in this manner, and both databases are currently completely separate of one another. Even the IP addresses of the sites are unique. If you are receiving a banned message, please post a screenshot, as your username shows no such clue. It is possible Akismet and anti-spam databases are preventing you from posting messages with hyperlinks if you are a new user on either site. This can take place when you include links and/or spam keywords until you reach a certain point in your usership on either website. If the IP address was banned for spam on one site, but not the other, this can also be a reason. We have had to ban certain IPs in the past, moreso on Windows7Forums.com, due to attempted spam abuse. It is possible you got caught in this trap. Either way, we would need a screen shot of the exact message to rectify the problem for you.

    Re: I got banned!!!

    Hi Mike

It's not a problem, as I said when I first tried to set up my account here I couldn't get it to except the same ID I used on the Windows 7 forum.
This was probably the day the forum opened.

So I created another account as MikeMoss another play on British race car drivers names.

A few days later it was working so I created my MikeHawthorne account.

Yesterday when I logged into Windows 7 for the first time in many months I clicked on and e-mail that targeted this forum.
Apparently it tried to log me into the old account but I didn't notice since I didn't intend to follow the link and just cancelled it.

When I logged back into Widows 8 and accessed this forum through the same e-mail it got the banned message...

It did the same thing again today.
But now that I know what's going on I can log into my normal account with no problems, I just have to make sure that the right user name is shown.

The part that I find strange is the logging into the forum in Windows 7 changed my login in Windows 8!
I would have thought that the 2 were completely separate.

    Mike

    Re: I got banned!!!

Many forums forbid multiple accounts. But if for example you live in a house hold with more than one person in. With friends or other members of your family, and the other members of your household are also members of the same forum. Then each member of that household would have the same IP address. Because they are using the Internet connection from the same house with the same ISP and IP address.

The IP addresses of each member would be the same as yours. As they are all connecting to the forum from the same building, your home. And so each member connecting from your household would have the same IP address and the same ISP.

The same is true if you are using a computer in an Internet cafe or public WiFi in a hotel. And the other users in the same building also are members of this forum or another forum. Then each members IP address would be the same as they are all using the same Internet connection. From the same ISP and IP address.

Has anyone ever thought about that? Andrea Borman.

Absolutely, Andrea. In the case of a household, maybe it would be the intention of the forum to block any access from that address. But, like so many other aspects of security on the internet, there are methods to citcumvent it (as you well know). I have no idea how it can be operated, but, although the address is blocked on the site, this would not, of course, prevent that member from having normal access anywhere else but that particular site.
Have a look at para 4 here:

That's right David. If I came to your house with my laptop and used your Internet connection to connect to this forum. And you also logged into this forum on your account. Both our IP addresses would be the same.Because we are both using the same Internet connection and connecting from the same house.

The same is true if you live in a shared house or student accommodation. Where all of the residents in the building are sharing the same connection. And so the ISP and IP address of everyone in the building would be the same. And with a popular forum like this, there may be several members of the same household who are members of this forum. And so are connecting from the same IP address.

And some members forget their password and forum username or email address. So they cannot log into the forum. But on many forums if you create a second account, they ban you, even for this reason.

The other alternative is if you do forget your email address or username that you registered with the forum with. You could email the admin. But that would not be very safe. As anyone can email the admin or moderator pretending to be you.

And say they have forgot their username and email address. And if the admin were to email that person your forum username and email address and new password. If that person was not you, then your account is compromised.

So surly in this case creating a second account and then explaining to the admin why you did that.Would be a better and more secure option, than having a member email the admin saying they have forgotten their email address and username.

But some people abuse forums and websites,by creating multiple accounts for the purpose of spamming.Or promoting their websites or affiliate links. And that is why many websites and forums are security conscious. And have don't allow members to have more than one account for any reason.

But it also means that a lot of innocent people who are not spammers are effected. And if you or other members of your household is a member of the same forum. You are wrongly mistaken for having multiple accounts. When you do not have.

And banning someone's IP address does not work.As that member can just change their IP address. And also you may be stopping other guests and members from getting onto your site. As many people have got the same ISP and so have the same IP address. Andrea Borman.
